A recent study by the audio streaming platform Mixcloud has discovered the most popular genre searches in each US state and some of the results might be surprising.

Compiling data collected by the platform throughout the year in 2017, Mixcloud found that the afrobeat genre is currently the fastest growing genre search, lead by artists like Wizkid, Davido, and Tiwa Savage.

In the US specifically, various house sub genres like deep house, tribal house and jazzy house are the most popular in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, North Dakota, Montana, Iowa and Rhode Island. Reggae is the most popular in California and hip hop is the leading genre in New York, while listeners in South Carolina are avid listeners of industrial.

Speaking about the data collection, Mixcloud Co-founder and Director of Content touched on the diverse range of content on the platform:

“This data not only shows how much amazing and fascinating content lives on Mixcloud, with an increasing amount of it exclusive to Mixcloud, but also the diversity of it, from reggae and hip-hop to political Podcasts and work-out mixes. The breadth of Mixcloud’s content, as well as the scope of its reach, will only continue to expand heading into 2018, with many more incredible exclusives on deck. We couldn’t be more excited to kick-start the new year.”
