Ceremony to name street after MF DOOM will take place this weekend

This weekend, a ceremony will be held in Long Beach, New York, where a street is set to be named in honour of the late rapper MF DOOM.

The street, which runs between Riverside and Long Beach Boulevard where the rapper grew up, will be named 'KMD - MF DOOM Way' in the ceremony held on Saturday, July 31, 2:PM EST.

MF DOOM - real name Daniel Dumile - will be honoured alongside his brother Dingilizwe with whom he formed a hip hop group in the 90s named KMD.

The trio, together with Rodan originally, later replaced by Onyx the Birthstone Kid, will also be remembered via the newly named street. Dingilizwe passed away in 1993 at the age of 19 causing the trio to split.

MF DOOM’s career skyrocketed in the years since, until his untimely death in October last year.

The street naming ceremony was approved on July 6 by the local council after being pushed by professor and school friend of DOOM, Patrick C. Graham.

Speaking on the ceremony, Graham told HipHopDX, “the honouring of Daniel Dumile, the artist known as MF DOOM, is part of a tradition that must include the hip hop generation.

“His hip-hop lyricism represents some of the culture’s best linguistic metaphors, garnering intergenerational and interracial admiration. His life and art symbolise the resilience we need in our present context.”

The street name was also lobbied for by Jason ‘J-Quest the Boogieman’ Massey, a KMD dancer who started a petition and presentation under the ‘KMD – MF DOOM Way Committee’.
