Man fatally shot while leaving Chicago's The California Clipper

A 32-year-old man was shot dead in an attempted robbery in the early hours of Sunday, July 16 — while leaving Chicago music venue The California Clipper.

Marshall Russel left the venue around 2:AM, before he was stopped by a group of people in a silver sedan. The group tried to rob Russell, which lead to a physical fight — according to Chicago police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill via Block Club Chicago.

Police said that Russell received multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Russell had been working at a local restaurant, Owen & Engine which has closed in respect for the loss of its colleague with the statement: “We lost a beloved colleague and need another day to process this unimaginable tragedy.”

General manager Matt Zavala of The California Clipper told Resident Advisor: "Marshall was a wonderful part of our community, and to think that he won't be around anymore to tell us about his day is saddening. This is nothing compared to what his family must be going through. Stay safe and look out for each other, Chicago."

The California Clipper has been running since 1937 and is a landmark bar and music venue in Chicago.

Based in the Humboldt Park area of the city, the venue has had a huge list of DJs perform through the years including Beau Wanzer, Traxman, Ariel Zetina and Rahaan.

The same weekend of Russell’s death, at least six others were killed and 26 injured after a weekend of shootings occurred in Chicago according to NBC, with victims aged from 13 to 64-years-old.
