A 24-year-old man has died at a rave in northern New South Wales, Australia.

The man's body was found in a car at the remote site of the 2500-person Omega Festival, on private property in Dalmorton State Forest, around 2pm on Sunday.

The cause of death is not yet known and police are investigating whether it was drug-related.

The ABC reports police said the event began on Saturday and continued until Monday afternoon, the Queen's Birthday holiday, when it was due to finish, despite their requests for organisers to shut it down following the death.

Detective Inspector Darren Jameson told the ABC police had been to the site but did not have the power to stop the rave. They had to obtain a crime scene warrant to enter to investigate and had to leave afterwards.

The festival's organisers had originally planned to hold the event at a different location, but the local Tenterfield Shire Council took court action and it was moved to the private site.

"Despite our best efforts police have forced us from the (original) property," organisers wrote on Facebook on Friday.

"We are left with no option but to relocate the festival, directions for the new site will be emailed to ticket buyers during this evening, please do not post the new directions to Facebook."
