Led By Donkeys project #Justice4Windrush message onto White Cliffs of Dover

Campaign group Led By Donkeys projected a video message onto the White Cliffs of Dover in support of the #Justice4Windrush campaign last week (Thursday, June 20).

The message featured RAF squadron leader Sidney McFarlane talking about his experiences of racism and prejudice in Britain, after being “invited here to help rebuild the mother country” — in a call out to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer ahead of next week's UK general election.

The #Justice4Windrush campaign aims to educate the public about the history of the Windrush generation, and maintain the pressure on the Home Office to resolve the Windrush scandal, with the slogan “Don’t let the Home Office get away with it”, supported by a number of artists including, Craig David, AJ Tracey, Karen Gibson MBE and Don Letts.”

The campaign is in response the Windrush Scandal, where hundreds of British citizens of the Windrush generation were forcibly deported, stripped of their rights and wrongfully detained, as a result of the government’s ‘Hostile Environment’ policy, which put the onus on the NHS, landlords, banks, employers and others to make the UK "unliveable for undocumented migrants."

Despite a subsequent review of the government’s migration policy and a fund allocated for compensating victims of the scandal, justice has still not been delivered, with more than 50 Windrush victims having died whilst awaiting their compensation.

The Justice4Windrush website highlights that just 6% of eligible victims have received compensation, and that “Victims continue to live under threats of detention and deportation”, continuing, “The scandal is not over.”

The campaign marked another event yesterday, called Taste of The Caribbean 4 Windrush, which took place at the Marylebone theatre, featuring comedy as well as a live music performance from soul singer Jake Isaac.
