Jlin
'Dark Energy' (Planet MU)
7/10
Jlin will win the award for most appropriate album title of 2015. 'Dark Energy' is just that: a monochrome cacophony inspired by, according to the press release, 'sadness and anger'. "I can't create from a happy place," Jlin says; "it seems pointless." The grey shades and jagged angles (as well as a few terrifying vocal snips) are relentless, and only the hardened will have a good time all the way through, but Jlin's vision is unique and uncompromising. It's another new take on footwork and, unless we're mistaken (please tell us if so), the first album by a female artist in the genre.
