Here's a spanking mix from the Queen of Dirtybird, J.Phlip

The dirtybird crew's BBQ takeover of the Purple Stage at HARD's Day of the Dead was the unquestionable highlight of the festival, though there was one act amongst the beefy line up that threw down a set so deep and dirty that we came away from it feeling aurally violated: J.Phlip.

Jess Phillippe, also known as J.Phlip, is one of dirtybird's prodigies. Based in the Bay Area by way of Chicago and Berlin, she has been one of the rising stars of the VonStroke-orchestrated tech-house surge of the last couple of years. She's built a loyal following on the West Coast underground scene for throwing down in dingy warehouses and clubs, though with her North American tour in full swing she's quickly expanding to a strong nationwide audience.

A consummate crate digger, Jess got her first set of turntables at 19 whilst studying Engineering at University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana. She cut her teeth with a Sunday night residency in Chicago and after a three-year stint tearing up Berlin she's gone on to produce some big tracks with Huxley, Claude VonStroke and Julio Bashmore.

The exclusive mix that she's woven together for Mixmag goes back and forth between the dark corners of the warehouse and the isolation of headphones. Straddling lines between grinding, mechanical house and warm, lush techno this set is indicative of J.Phlip's eclectic style, and shows that she isn't afraid to grab audiences by the neck and drag them where she wants to go.

The mix features a handful of unreleased tracks, a collaboration with Brummy bassman Chris Lorenzo, as well as her and Huxley's 'Salvia' which made an appearance on his Essential Mix last week. We also get a good dose of Skream's neurotic remix of Paleman's 'Beezledub', a track which has become one of J.Phlip's go-to records this summer.
