"Spoil sports": Illegal rave shut down by police in Doncaster woodland

An illegal rave was shut down by police in Doncaster over the weekend, which locals said could be heard some five miles away.

The unlicensed event began on Saturday, November 29, and ran through until the afternoon of Sunday, November 30, according to Doncaster Free Press.

Police noted that the illegal rave took place in a field in Wadworth Woods, a secluded area just south of Doncaster. They added that they received a “large volume of calls” about noise on Saturday night.

While police didn’t disclose the number of people in attendance, Doncaster Free Press reports that some locals complained that music could be heard “from miles around”.

“I could hear it from Rossington – the thump, thump, thump just kept going all night,” one local complained. Another said: “They must be having an illegal rave right next to the M18”.

Meanwhile, other locals defended ravers, with one posting on Facebook: “What's wrong with it? As long as there was no one hurt, leave ‘em be. There are lots of other more important things”. Another called police "spoil sports".

The unlicensed event was shut down at 12:30PM on Sunday after police were alerted to the area. Officers blockaded the road with “concrete blocks” to stop attendees entering the site, later removing them to allow people to exit.

“Officers attended the scene and made contact with the landowner before working effectively to restrict further access to the site,” said a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson.

“The music was turned down and after conversations with officers, attendees began dispersing the site. The site was fully vacated by 12.30pm,” they added.
