Ibiza residents call for cap on Balearic tourist numbers in new survey

Residents of the Balearic islands, including Ibiza, have called for a cap on the number of tourists visiting the islands in a new survey.

Commissioned by Balearic electoral party alliance Ara Més, and reported by Yorkshire Live, the poll asked 2,008 residents across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera on their opinions around visitors to the Spanish islands.

The survey not only asked Més voters for their views, of which 94% called for a limit on tourism to the islands, but also Balearic Islands Social Party (PSIB) voters and voters of right-wing parties Partido Popular (PP) and Vox.

69.1% of all those surveyed agreed that there should be a cap on tourism numbers, while 68.4% called for restricting tourist-catering accommodation and establishments, and a further 80.51% said there should be a reduction in the number of short-term holiday lets on the islands.

Out of those surveyed, 40% said they were "satisfied" with tourism numbers in the Balearics, while 38.8% disagreed, and the remaining 19.2% claimed to be undecided.

Last year, Ibiza's government Consell d’Eivissa signed an "unprecedented" deal with Airbnb to crack down on unregulated holiday rentals, removing over 300 properties from the short-term let platform as part of its "relentless fight against the island's unregulated [tourist accommodation] supply".
