Hyroglifics
Get to know the thunderous sounds of the Critical Music producer
Rowdy, roaring and rugged: three words that sum up the music of Surrey-based producer Hyroglifics.
Matt Harris' first release - the 'Senseless' EP on Peer Pressure Recordings - might have been on the softer side of drum 'n' bass, but most bits since have been battering rams. Take the bleep-laden 'Gang Signs' and last year's sword-swinging 'Esseker' for example: both hard-as-you-like hammerheads that came before 'Binary 001' on Critical and the frenetic 'Bun Dem' we gave away last year.
With those and other releases on Diffrent Music, Flexout Audio and Dispatch Recordings in the last three years, he's earned himself a place at this year's Red Bull Music Academy in France and, looking at its past alumni, he can very much have high hopes for the future.
"A lot of artists that have influenced me over the years, such as Flying Lotus and Evian Christ, have once been a part of it, so it's amazing to be attending this year," he says. "It all still feels quite surreal but I'm looking forward to meeting some interesting artists from all over the world and having the chance to work with them in the Red Bull Studios the two weeks I'm there."
There's plenty going on before he gets his head down at the Academy in Paris, though, where he'll be attending classes with the likes of Local Action and True Panther Sounds producer Lil Jabba, Lit City Trax artist Drippin and Suicideyear. First he's got his first proper EP on Critical later this month ("I've learnt a lot this year since working with closely with Kasra and everyone in the Critical camp has been really supportive of my music," he tells us), then there's the trip to Croatia for Outlook Festival where he'll be going back-to-back with Critical high-flyers Ivy Lab.
It looks like he'll be with the Critical crew for a while having "signed exclusively" with them in June last year and an album may well come at some point, although he's not in that mind frame just yet.
"I'm always thinking about potential concepts and ideas for an album and I really love the idea of having complete freedom in terms of having the ability to make whatever I want and using this to try and convey more of a journey. Although at this point in time I don't feel that I'm 100 per cent ready to write an album just yet as they take up such a substantial amount of time."
For now we've got the 'No Drama' EP and judging by that, the relationship's going to benefit us lot as much as it will them.
