Hanoi's Savage nightclub announces closure due to government redevelopment

Hanoi's Savage nightclub has announced that it will close "in the coming months" due to a government urban development project in the Quảng An Peninsula.

The Dang Thai Mai-based queer venue shared the news via an Instagram post yesterday (19 March), writing: "Savage Club in Hanoi announces its imminent closure due to a government-led urban development project in Quang An Peninsula, anticipated for sometime later this year, 2025."

Established in 2016 by French expats Samy, Ouissam and Julie, Savage has been at its Quảng An location for the last five years — establishing itself as one of Vietnam's most beloved underground nightclubs.

The venue is home to several acclaimed underground parties such as Ouissam's Snug and drag night Peach, as well as hosting regular guest and minimal-inclined knees up, METRØ.

Local authorities in Hanoi approved its development project for the Quảng An Peninsula in December; according to a report from Vietnam Investment Review, the project will see the 44.1-hectare area transformed to contain a series of new parks, entertainment areas, tourism hotel developments and other commercial and service provisions.

The development is also set to connect Quảng An with Hanoi's urban areas, with officials claiming it will "Improve technical and transportation infrastructure while protecting West Lake's ecological water environment and the surrounding area."

While the exact date for Savage's closing remains unclear, the announcement shared it would be coming "later in 2025", with Savage now entering its "final chapter" in Dang Thai Mai.

It is unknown at the time of publishing if Savage will move to a new location in Hanoi following the closure. In 2020 Mixmag visited Savage, you can read the feature by Alice Austin, here.
