48% of UK venues launched in 2025 have already closed, new report claims

48% of live music and entertainment venues in UK that opened in 2025 are no longer in operation, a new report from ticketing and community events platform TicketSource has found.

The study analysed Companies House data on entertainment, music and community arts venues that have launched within the last decade, with their findings suggesting that most venues last just 2.1 years from opening.

It also found that 73% of venues shutter before they reach the three-year mark, while 89% don't make it to nine years.

According to the data, around 15 venues opened each week on average last year, while 11 closed per week, resulting in a "net gain" of four per week. For every 100 venues that opened, 69 closed, meaning two out of three venues shuttered.

“The UK is not at an extinction point just yet, but the margin is narrow enough to make the question feel uncomfortably real," says TicketSource's Head of Marketing Terry Rosoman.

“In 2025, the sector added 242 venues overall, with 799 openings offset by 557 closures. On the surface, that still looks like growth, but the gap is clearly tightening," they continue.

"The data also shows that many closures happen early. And in reality, that’s often the hardest part - turning a great venue idea into something that can truly last. If that trend continues at a similar pace, closures could begin to match openings within the next decade.”
