Gorillaz’ ‘Song Machine’ is coming to cinemas

A live performance of Gorillaz’ seventh studio album ‘Song Machine’ gets a silver screen appearance on December 8.

The four-piece live performance of 2020-released record ‘Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez’ will screen for one day only next month.

Gorillaz: Song Machine Live From Kong hits the big screen on December 8 worldwide, with multiple screenings in and around London. The Damon Albarn-fronted band announced the news on Instagram at the start of the month.

The elusive group added that the screening would feature exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, as well as a pre-show programme to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Recorded at their London HQ, Kong Studios, the film follows the animated band as they perform their 17-track album featuring a slew of guests from the record, which also includes several interviews with featured artists.

Just last week, Damon Albarn gave news of a new Gorillaz film in partnership with Netflix to be released in the near future. The confirmation came from Albarn via Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 interview, years after rumours first circled of a potential feature-length film.

“It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time. It’s been through so many incarnations… this Gorillaz doing a movie. But Netflix, I don’t know,” he said.

Albarn also added that the band were due in for a writing session that same afternoon in Malibu, and nodded to the creativity of Netflix’ team. “It’s just extraordinary to see how ubiquitous they are now,” he said.

“I see a lot of people doing animated videos these days, but I don’t think they really touch the quality of ours. We’re more in the world of Studio Ghibli.”
