The Indian state of Goa, known as the country’s rave and dance music destination, has announced it will crack down on the all-night dance parties which the state has become known for.

Although no new legislation has passed, Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar shared that local authorities will start enforcing a ban on loud noise after 10, a law that has long been ignored in the past.

Parrikar expressed as much to reporters: "There is a legal ban on holding parties after 10 pm. The ban will be upheld by the state government”.

Goa has developed a reputation for being a party hotspot, with millions of tourists flocking to the state to enjoy its nightlife and beaches. That said, the state has been marred by controversy surrounding suspicious tourist deaths and high-profile crimes, also involving drugs and alcohol.

A week before Parrikar’s announcement, Goa's water resources minister Vinod Palyekar called for an end to such late-night dance parties: "These parties are against our culture. We need to stop them immediately”
