Ghetts pleads guilty to causing death by dangerous driving during court appearance
The London-born musician is accused of failing to stop after hitting a 20-year-old Nepali student in North London, who died as a result of his injuries two days later
Ghetts has admitted to causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in October.
The London-born musician, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, is accused of failing to stop his car after hitting 20-year-old Nepali student Yubin Tamang at 11:30PM on October 18 in Ilford, North London.
Clarke-Samuel was arrested and charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving at his home in Woolford the next day (October 19).
The charges against Clarke-Samuel were upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving after Tamang died as a result of his injuries two days after the crash on October 20.
According to BBC News, a "significantly damaged" black BMW, registered to Clarke-Samuel, was recovered by officers on behalf of the Metropolitan Police, who allege that he was driving "60MPH in a 30MPH zone" at the time of the incident.
Clarke-Samuel faces a second charge of dangerous driving in East London on the same day, and another charge of causing death by dangerous driving while over the legal alcohol limit.
Police claim Clarke-Samuel had 119 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath while driving; the legal limit in England is 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.
Clarke-Samuel appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Pentonville Prison. He was informed by the judge that he could expect a jail term and has been banned from driving.
Both the length of the jail term and driving ban are yet to be established, however, convictions for death by dangerous driving can carry sentences that range from community service to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
According to statistics from the Sentencing Council, the average sentence is currently around four-and-a-half years.
Clarke-Samuel is due to be sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving on February 12. The court will also hear further charges against him on this appearance.
