DJ Priya launches free 'DJ School' in Brighton for beginner DJs

DJ Priya has announced that she will be hosting a six-week course of free DJing workshops in Brighton this spring through summer.

Priya took to Instagram to share the arrival of "DJ Priya's DJ School", a course of DJing workshops aimed at beginners, people of colour and people of low-income backgrounds.

The news follows the success of last year's workshops, which were launched in collaboration with Voices Radio in London for the same demographic.

The classes will take place during the evenings in Hove, from April 23 - May 22, with applications closing in ten days (April 13).

Attendees will learn entry DJing skills from sourcing music to mixing, editing and making a start in the industry. The aspiring DJs will also have access to a mentoring chat where DJ Priya will be on hand to assist with questions.

"I really do go the extra mile with my workshops to make sure that my mentees feel happy, safe, confident and comfortable" DJ Priya told Mixmag.

"They know that they have my support 24/7, even after the workshops I help them with contracts, riders, and navigating the music industry as a beginner" she added.

Alongside these practical skills, the course will be an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and showcase their talent during a live set at the end of the six weeks.

The course has been launched in partnership with Dishoom's Brighton Cafe, Permit Room and local arts and event space Platf9rm, wherein the workshops will be held.

Platf9rm hosts a cultural programme of events, including comedy nights, life coaching, music, workshops, food and drink events, networking opportunities and more.

"Resources like these are far and few between, it’s never too late to learn something new!" the DJ urged via social media.

Inspired by her own experiences and a desire to empower others, DJ Priya revealed, "I learnt how to DJ at a workshop just like the ones that I curate now".

After encountering the costs beginner DJs face when entering the industry, she said "I knew then that I wanted to teach, and that I wanted to make these workshops even more accessible for people, I also wanted them to be free".

"No one should ever miss out on an opportunity to find something that they love because of their funds, lack of experience, or because they don’t feel welcome in a specific space" she concluded.
