Four people have been killed and a further 14 injured following a shooting outside Chicago nightclub Artis on Wednesday (July 2).

The incident occurred at around 11:PM when attendees began exiting the venue following a show from Chicago-hailing rapper Mello Buckzz.

Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said in a news conference (via ABC News) that a vehicle pulled up outside the River North venue and opened fire at a crowd gathered outside. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Two men aged 23 and 25 and two women, one aged 26 and the second currently unidentified, were all pronounced dead following the shooting, police have confirmed.

Police also said that it’s currently unclear who the target was. Two different calibers of bullets have been recovered, but no one has been taken into custody as of yet.

“They didn’t care who was struck, and in a matter of seconds, they were able to shoot 18 people,” said Larry Snelling. He added that all victims were in their 20s and 30s.

Mello Buckzz took to Instagram after the incident, writing: “My heart broke into so many pieces, it’s unbelievable,” later adding: “My heart is so fucking heavy I love you all dearly, I’m sorry.”

Pastor Donovan Price – who helps victims of violence – explained (via ABC News): “When I arrived last night it was absolute chaos. From people screaming, to blood on the streets, to people laying on the streets, a massive police presence.”

“Just horrific. More than I’ve ever seen. It can happen anywhere, it’s devastating,” he said, adding that hospitals were almost “as chaotic” as the crime scene itself.
