Founding Azymuth member Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti has died aged 76
He was described as one of “the greatest drummers in history”
Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti, one of the founding members of Brazilian jazz-funk trio Azymuth, has passed away aged 76.
The news of his death was confirmed via Instagram earlier today by the late musician’s wife, Sandra Conti, and her children Ivana and Thiago. Sandra explained that “after 50 years together”, Ivan passed away on Monday, April 17.
“With a torn heart, my children and I announce that Ivan Miguel Conti Maranhao passed away on 17/04,” she wrote. “The wake will be 4/20 with time to be confirmed.”
Described as “one of the greatest drummers in history”, Conti was a beloved member of the 1973-formed outfit Azymuth alongside Jose Roberto Bertrami and Alex Malheiros.
Together, Azymuth released a number of albums via Milestone Records with inspiration from Brazilian funk, samba, and jazz, and helped to produce historic records for the likes of Ana Mazzotti and Madlib.
In 1996, Azymuth put together their first record for Far Out Recordings titled ‘Jazz Carnival’, and continued to release on the UK-based record label until 2020.
Conti is highly regarded as one of Brazil’s best percussionists releasing a number of solo records including ‘The Human Factor’ on Milestone in 1984.
“We are devastated and shocked to hear the news that our dear friend Ivan "Mamão" Conti passed away this morning,” reads a tribute from Far Out Recordings.
“Mamão leaves behind a profound musical legacy for which we'll be forever grateful. As well as being a musical icon, Ivan was a joyous, kind hearted, hilarious and immensely charismatic man.”
“He had time for everybody and thrived off the love of his family, friends, fellow musicians and fans, which he reciprocated through his music, his warmth and his generosity.”
The wake will take place from 11:AM to 2:PM on April 20 in the Crematorium and Cemetery of Penitence. Read further tributes for Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti below.
