Sheffield's Niche to return for "biggest event ever" for 30th anniversary

Legendary Sheffield nightclub Niche is set to host a 5,000-strong party this autumn in celebration of its 30th anniversary.

News of Niche’s birthday celebrations were announced via former resident DJ Jamie Duggan on Instagram earlier this month, writing: “The legendary Niche all-nighter is back!”

Nearly two decades after it was first shuttered, the birthplace of bassline will bring back its famous extended club night to a currently unannounced venue on Saturday, November 1, with a party running from 4:PM until 2:AM.

The line-up for the event is yet to be revealed, though Duggan said to expect “all of the original names you associate with Niche, and all of the DJs and producers that made you fall in love with the sound.”

"A club that defined generations of people,” he wrote. “A club that gave birth to bassline. It’s time to take Niche to the biggest of stages! The legend awakens.”

The event will welcome some 5,000 people in “the biggest Niche event in history”, promising an array of artists playing old skool speed garage and “all the biggest bassline anthems”.

Niche first opened in 1995 by founder Steve Baxendale, ultimately closing 10 years later in 2005 after a police raid – dubbed ‘Operation Repatriation’ – which involved 300 police officers. It was one of the largest raids in Sheffield’s history.

The venue has since been the subject of a documentary, titled Drop: The Story of Basslinehighlighting the birth of bassline in Sheffield and the raid that ultimately led to Niche’s closure.

“This is not a drill, this is happening,” Duggan wrote. “30 years of bassline, speed garage, and old skool house music history will be made right here in the city where it all began… Sheffield! Spread the word, NICHE IS BACK!”
