Extinction Rebellion is planning to continue its campaign to highlight the climate crisis by staging a protest at Glastonbury, with the blessing of the festival.

The group will march through the site on Thursday from 4pm, starting the demonstration at The Park stage with keynote speakers discussing the issue of global warming and insisting on the urgency needed for tackling the problem.

At 5.30pm the protestors will head to the Stone Circle to create a human sculpture of the Extinction Rebellion logo, an hourglass which symbolises time running out for our planet. In doing so, the activists will attempt the largest ever human hourglass.

Glastonbury confirmed the news, detailing the march in a tweet, writing: “On the Thursday of #Glastonbury2019, there will be an #ExtinctionProcession, allowing you to stand up against a climate catastrophe. It begins in The Park at 4pm & culminates with a giant human sculpture of an hourglass in the Stone Circle at 5.30pm.”

This protest follows the group’s controversial demonstration in April, which saw thousands occupying Oxford Circus and a pink boat stationed in the middle of the busy road, leading to hundreds of arrests.

Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis said: “This is a chance for everybody at the Festival who feels passionately about protecting our planet and future generations to be part of a collective moment, before the main stages open up on the Friday. Everyone is invited to join in and listen to some inspiring speakers and send out a message to the world that this is a climate emergency and we need to act now.”
