Egyptian artist Assyouti stabbed in Berlin en route to Lebanon fundraiser event

Berlin-based Egyptian artist Assyouti has revealed he was stabbed in Berlin last weekend while travelling to a music and art event raising funds to support displaced families in Lebanon.

Sharing his story via Instagram, he revealed a person on an U-Bahn train began “harassing and pushing” two people he was with at the time, fellow musician Sara Persico and artist Alison Darby, then “when I tried to step in he stabbed me in the stomach and ran away.”

Assyouti was then rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

“Thankfully all of my vital organs were okay and they only had to fix the damage inside,” he (warning: graphic) shared, alongside an image of the stab wound.

“I decided to share this publicly as a reminder for everyone, not just in Berli but also everywhere else to take of care of [yo]urselves and each other because there’s so many psychos ou there, so please please please please be careful, and don’t interact with anyone that feels of to [yo]u, because [yo]u never know what can actually happen.

“I’m back home now and slowly recovering mentally and physically,” he added.

The event Assyouti was travelling to was the Fundraiser for Lebanon at Berlin music and arts venue Panke venue.

He was scheduled to perform music alongside Sara Persico, FRANKIE, Jealous Orgasm, Marylou, Tony Elieh and Rubedo, with an exhibition of drawings of Gaza and Lebanon by Mazen Kerbaj.

Mixmag reached out to Assyouti, who has encouraged people to donate to support humanitarian relief in Lebanon.

Money raised by the event is being donated to the Beirut Synth Center and Tunefork Studios, who recently teamed up to launch a fundraising campaign to support humanitarian relief in Lebanon.

Assyouti, who co-curates event series No_Stone alongside Barcelona DJ Jehia, previously contributed to Love Boat Records’ ‘Music for Palestine’ compilation in May, with all proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians (M.A.P.).

Assyouti was due to perform at Future East Festival in Berlin and Hundebiss Night in Bologna this weekend, but due to the injuries he suffered in the attack, he has been forced to cancel his appearance at these two gigs.

Last month another Berlin-based artist, Dominga of Chilean electronic group Föllakzoi, alleged she targeted in a transphobic attack at Berlin nightclub Sameheads.

She has since launched ABOV in response, the new club night and collective, aims to “reclaim spaces” within Berlin’s FLINTA* community.
