Ecstasy's legal in Ireland until midnight

"Unconstitutional" additions to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 caused the brief legalisation

Ecstasy's currently legal in Ireland. But only for a while longer!

Sound strange to you? It's because the legalisation was accidentally created when additions to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 were deemed "unconstitutional" (eg. Not going through Irish parliament) in the Court of Appeal yesterday.

Basically, what this means is that, until emergency legislation is passed at midnight tonight, possessing any drugs in the Act (including ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth) isn't actually a criminal offence.

The Health Minister was working on Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill late last night, but, because of a "provision" in the new bill, changes cannot take effect until a day after its been signed.

We guess it'll be a mad 12 hours in Ireland, then…
