Documentary film focusing on Berlin’s KitKat club coming next year
"The film started for me as a tribute to the legendary club”
A brand new documentary film honing in on the hedonistic nature of one of Berlin’s most iconic clubs, KitKat, is set to land next year.
Directed by Philipp Fussenegger, the documentary is currently in production but is said to be due for release in 2023.
The film’s name is taken from a sign in the garden area of the club, titled KitKatClub – Das Leben ist ein Zirkus and translated to KitKatClub – Life Is A Circus.

Fussenegger shot the film over the course of the pandemic while the club was closed and used the empty space as the backdrop for his next film, which was subsequently turned into a COVID testing centre during the heights of Germany’s cases.
Groove first reported news of the documentary film, adding that the director is a regular club attendee and wanted to demonstrate the sex-positive club’s by-night debauchery.
“KitKatClub - Life Is A Circus tells the story of the legendary Berlin club and its founder, whose life is inseparably interwoven with the light and dark sides of a hedonistic lifestyle,” reads the film’s synopsis.

The film is also set to pay homage to the guests who return to the club, which sits along the river in Jannowitzbrücke, East Berlin. "The film started for me as a tribute to the legendary club,” Fussenegger said on the production.
“But is increasingly becoming a film about the unique people behind it, above all of course [the owner] Kirsten, who I have come to know and appreciate over the years as the woman who holds everything together."
The film was backed by €100,000 of funding to see its release in 2023. Find out more about KitKatClub – Das Leben ist ein Zirkus here.
