DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Afrika Bambaataa documentary screening tonight in DTLA
Doc about legendary turntablists digging in Afrika Bambaataa’s record collection on recent tour
Much was written about the curious 'Renegades of Rhythm' tour from master turntablists DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, in which the pair were given exclusive access to hip hop legend Afrika Bambaataa's 40,000+ record collection and sent out to make music on a 25-date US tour.
The tour was subsequently filmed and turned into a documentary, which will have the world premiere at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles tonight at 9:30pm, and will be followed by a Q&A with the DJs about the tour.
Of the project, DJ Shadow (real name Josh Davis) said, "This has never been done before, definitely not on this scale. They're his (Bambaataa's) records, with his blessings. This isn't just any copy of 'X' breakbeat, it's the copy, the copy that started everything."
This will be a rare opportunity to get a glimpse at the record collection that started an entire genre of music, and to see how to two current genre heavyweights can reappropriate the sounds and transform them into something entirely new.
