Being a DJ is the number one dream career in New Zealand, according to a new study.

By analysing online searches for new career paths around the world, Remitly discovered that becoming a DJ is one of the most desirable jobs globally.

In New Zealand, 'how to be a DJ' was the most searched career shift, topping desirability for jobs such as veterinarian, acting, accounting, writing, or becoming a CEO.

'How to be a music producer' also ranked 15th in New Zealand, while other careers such as being a doctor, YouTuber, pilot or lawyer were also ranked at the top.

Of the 145 countries included in the study, being a DJ was the 10th most desirable job around the world, trumped by being a firefighter, police officer, or flight attendant.

"In 2022, we set out to uncover the world's most coveted dream jobs," Remitly said, noting that the most popular career searches have "shifted dramatically since we first started this research".

"We revisited the data in 2024, and now, two years on, we're back for a third look at the most popular jobs people across 145 countries are searching for when they imagine their next career chapter."

Since 2024, learning to become a DJ has drastically popularised in online searches, jumping up 14 places in the ranking in just two years from 24th to 10th globally.

Overall, being a DJ was the second most-searched career path in the arts sector after acting, with 97,930 searches around the world.
