DJ New Jersey Drone
Syn Stair EP
7/10
The last DJ New Jersey Drone record we reviewed, ‘Energy’, hit super high speeds and was a technoid workout for dystopia-obsessed rave kids. Uptempo genres were a clear influence – footwork, jungle, hardtek – but while the velocity remains on ‘Syn Stair’, the weight has been whittled out, leaving only streams of electronics that wiggle like synapses in overdrive.
Similarities could be drawn with the weirder parts of Kode9’s latest album ‘Nothing’ or the out-there rave of Brood Ma, but DJNJD definitely operates on his own drift: ‘Sharp’ is a cavaclade of synthesis joined by intermittent drum beats, ‘Syn 555 Zone’ is the sound of an amphetmaine rush taking hold of the human bloodstream and ‘Spectral Future Loop’ is a fucked-up jam that pushes warehouse rave music to the outer limit.
Another coup for Purple Tape Pedigree, which is slowly but surely positioning itself as a bastion for club music of an hitherto unknown kind.
