DJ Marcelle to take a break from DJing following heart attack
The Dutch DJ will take a break for "at least a few months" to recover from open-heart bypass surgery
DJ Marcelle has confirmed that she will be taking a break from DJing after suffering a heart attack last week, Resident Advisor reports.
The Dutch DJ, who usually operates under the double moniker DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess, will be unable to perform for "at least a few months" as she prepares to undergo open-heart bypass surgery in the coming weeks.
Believed to have occurred while she was playing tennis last week (February 26), Marcelle says she only realised that she had suffered a heart attack after googling her symptoms.
She then received emergency treatment for an blockage by doctors at a hospital in Amsterdam. However, tests later revealed that she requires further surgery to treat the condition.
"It's devastating, I felt totally fit," she told RA. "But at least this happened in Amsterdam and not when I was on a plane or something. And the medical system in The Netherlands is good."
Known for her "rugged and raw" approach to DJing, the Amsterdam-based DJ has been enrapturing dancefloors across Europe and further afield for over two decades.
It's currently unknown what shows Marcelle will be forced to postpone, with upcoming dates including a headline show at Amsterdam's Club RAUM in April and a slot at Polifonic Festival in Puglia, Southern Italy, in July.
