A dance music-focused theatre show ‘God Is A DJ’ is coming to the West End

A new dance music-focused theatre production is currently in development, named after the classic 1998 Faithless track ‘God Is A DJ’.

The stage show, which promises to bring together club culture and theatre, is set to head to London’s West End following development, though no venue or dates are confirmed as of yet.

God Is A DJ will feature “DJ performances, a live band, and iconic dance hits”, according to the website, in a first-of-its-kind theatre show that “reimagines the pulse of dance music in a bold theatrical experience”.

The musical is written by Jessica Swale and directed by Vicky Featherstone, both of whom have picked up Olivier Awards for their work, while BAFTA winner Matthew Brind will head up Musical Direction.

Speaking to What’s On Stage, Featherstone explained: “Having fallen deeply in love with clubbing and dance music at the Haçienda and the Paradise Factory in ‘90s Manchester, the opportunity to bring that experience to the stage in a musical which celebrates our eternal search to belong and to exist as one, even for a moment, feels very special.”

“Nothing can ever replace the feeling as we all raise our arms in the air, forgetting the world outside and are taken to a different place by the skill of the DJ and the music,” she says.

The show is based on an original concept by Irit Ten Hengel, and follows characters through a story of “the ecstasy and pain of superstardom and the power of music”, which will invite the audience to join performers on the dancefloor.

Those interested in God Is A DJ can find out more details in early 2027, Mixmag is told.
