ByteDance-owned app Resso to cease service in India due to "market conditions"

ByteDance’s streaming app Resso is set to shut down services in India, effective January 31 in response to "market conditions" within the country, a spokesperson has said.

The music streaming app, which is owned by TikTok's parent company ByteDance, launched in India in March 2020 — becoming its largest market, after the service was shut down in Brazil and Indonesia, Billboard reports.

The launch followed India issued a ban on ByteDance subsidiaries TikTok, Helo, and Capcut, three years prior.

ByteDance have not provided a reason for the app's removal from Google Play and Apple stores, though Indian publication Moneycontrol reports that it was at the requite of the Indian government.

According to The Economic Times India, a source within the Indian government claims that the decision was down to requests for information on the data processing of customers.

“The app had not provided any response to the queries in the notices that were sent to them and has instead chosen to exit the market,” the source told The Economic Times India.

However, ByteDance issued a rebuttal in response to the claims, stating that it has "not received any notices from the government."

A ByteDance spokesperson told Mixmag, “Unfortunately, owing to local market conditions, we can no longer continue to serve users of Resso in India. Users will be offered a refund of their remaining subscription fees."

“We have therefore taken the decision to shut down Resso and its associated operations on January 31st. Users will be offered a refund of their remaining subscription fees,” ByteDance told Billboard.
