Long-running Bristol nightclub The Basement closed due to development

One of Bristol’s longest-running nightclubs, The Basement, has permanently closed down following development plans from its landlord.

The Stokes Croft-based club confirmed its closure on social media in August, with the final party taking place on Saturday, October 8 — ending its 12-year run.

The Basement announced that, while the development plans had been in place for some time, the club had “no influence” over them.

“We are sad to announce that The Basement will be closing permanently this autumn and that the frankly amazing series of events there will be coming to an end,” reads a post from the club on Facebook.

“The closure is because of the landlord's development plans for the building, over which we have no influence. We had a feeling this could happen, given the changes happening in Stokes Croft,” it added. “We’re grateful for all the times we've had, to play music and dance with you.”

The Basement first opened in 2010 in St Pauls, offering “affordable events” — DJ lessons, and an array of local DJs taking over shows at the venue during that time.

“Everybody says this on such occasions, but sincerely, we've loved every moment and made memories that we'll cherish forever! We have met so many genuine and wonderful people, including many reading this,” the club added.

Following the club’s final party at the start of October, The Basement promises to stick around in Bristol’s music scene under a new name.

“We're seeking to continue our DJ exploits at other venues over the coming months, under the name West of England Combined Authority Space Agency.”
