London-based Black and queer/trans led collective, Black Obsidian Soundsystem, have announced that they will be providing gratuitous DJ and production sessions at FOLD in Canning Town, London.

The workshops are part of an effort to contribute to an “ecosystem that stretches beyond nepotism”, according to a caption posted by the group on Instagram.

The sessions will be free of charge and run on Wednesday evenings, throughout the month of July.

Priority will be given to those amongst the “ Black & queer / trans family” , and in particular “those who currently don't have access to equipment through their networks and those who have a local connection to Newham or Tower Hamlets.”

According to the collective’s statement following their 2021 Turner prize nomination, Black Obsidian Soundsystem have been a movement self-defined by their efforts to bring together “a community of queer trans and nonbinary Black people of colour involved in art, sound and radical activism.”

In doing this the “soundsystem” is drawn upon as “an archetype of black expression in order to present a more nuanced and complex picture of our individual and collective concerns.”
