The Barbican Centre is running a month-long exhibition and talks programme celebrating pirate radio this June.

Rebel Radio started on Sunday, June 1, and will run until Monday, June 30,  featuring a residency from youth-led broadcaster Reprezent Radio who will be broadcasting live from the East London arts centre across four dates this month.

Alongside recorded sets and stories detailing the history of pirate radio in the UK capital, Reprezent will also be welcoming guests such as Daddy Ernie, Shabba D, DJ Spoony, Norman Jay, Ragga Twins & Jamie Rodigan, and Logan Sama.

The Barbican will also host a one-off club night, curated by former pirate broadcaster Rinse FM. Dial Shift will take place on June 13 and will feature pirate radio originators going b2b with emerging new talent from the London bass scene.

The line-up includes Eastman b2b Cuppa Sounds, Slimzee b2b Chamber45 w/ Manga Saint Hilare + RB and DJ Ron b2b Sali (NRG CRU).

The Barbican Centre has created listening posts in its foyer as part of the Rebel Radio exhibition, and will screen a series of archive films focusing on pirate radio in London across June — including Breaking the Silence: Pirate Radio, Black Media and Voices of Resistance, Airwaves of Rebellion: Youth, Identity and the Fight for Community Radio, plus a screening of Isaac Julien’s Young Soul Rebels.

This Saturday (June 7) the Barbican will host a storytelling masterclass entitled Make Yourself Heard, instructing attendees on how to craft a DIY broadcast setup alongside "interviewing and hosting, recording and postproduction editing software".
