Balearic Islands’ government is investigating Katy Perry for alleged unauthorised music video

Katy Perry is under investigation from the government of Spain’s Balearic Islands for allegedly filming a music video in Ibiza and Formentara, which both have protected areas of significant size to preserve the environment, without necessary permissions.

A press release put out by the Spanish islands’ government alleges the production company WeOwnTheCity did not attain the required permission to film the video for the track ‘LIFETIMES’, which sees Katy Perry partying in legendary Balearic clubs, riding a boat around the coast, and other typical tourist activities.

The most concern has been raised by scenes filmed showing the protected dunes of S’Espalmador, a private, uninhabited island close to Formentera which holds “great ecological value”, according to the Balearic Islands’ tourism website.

Spanish officials confirmed “preliminary investigation actions” have been initiated, though they have stated Perry is not being investigated for “crimes against the environment”, noting that it is possible for filming permission to be obtained.

A spokesperson for Perry told the BBC that “the local video production company assured us all necessary permits for the video were secured” and that they had “verbal authority” to film.

Speaking about the track, Perry said. “‘LIFETIMES’ is a song about eternal love. It’s about finding that one deep and satisfying love of your life. A soulmate doesn’t always have to come in the form of a partner - it can come in all different ways, a child, a best friend, a pet. For me it is my daughter - I ask her every night, ‘Will you find me in every lifetime?’ She says yes, and I feel found. You’ll find each other, over and over again, for lifetimes.”

It will feature on her upcoming album ‘143’, released via Capitol Record on September 20.
