Bakongo
Grind / Tee Oh Ell
8/10
Roska’s been crafting low-end house for the best part of a decade. He’s navigated the changing tides of that particular area of dance music successfully, becoming a key protagonist in the UK funky movement and fitting neatly into the more recent bass-house explosion. Put simply, rhythm never goes out of fashion, and Roska’s got it in spades.
Given his career arc and dedication to the Roska name, it comes as no surprise that he’s chosen to freshen things up with an outing on Mele’s label under new guise Bakongo.
And guess what? It’ll make you dance in a hot second. The rhythmic verve is all there in the carnival shuffle of ‘Grind’, which is a minimalist banger with a naughty bassline. ‘Tee Oh Ell’, meanwhile, is just as funky but, as is expected on the flip, dubbier and more focused. Two proper workouts here, get involved.
