At least 29 people killed in Istanbul nightclub blaze

The Masquerade nightclub, which is located in the city's Gayrettepe district, had been closed due to renovations

At least 29 people killed in Istanbul nightclub blaze

A fire inside a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey has killed at least 29 people with several injured.

According to the BBC, The Masquerade nightclub - which is located in the basement of a 16-storey residential building in the Gayrettepe district - was closed and undergoing renovations.

Istanbul governor Davut Gül has said that the fire broke out around midday today, with no cause revealed as of yet.

Gül has shared that the victims of the fire are thought to have been involved in the renovation work.

The Istanbul governor's office has said according to Sky News that at least one person is being treated in hospital.

Gül has also announced that the fire had been extinguished and an investigation was underway.

Since the fire, five people have been arrested in connection with the fire including three workplace officials, the nightclub manager and the manager of the renovation.

The Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu has shared on Twitter the following: “May God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to our injured.”
