A new documentary clip accounts Avicii's ill-fated 2013 Australian tour

Following the release of his transformative hit track ‘Levels’ in July of 2011, Swedish artist Avicii was all-at-once showered with celebrity and catapulted into the hectic lifestyle of an high-demand touring DJ.

Starting at just 18 years old, the artist’s meteoric rise to fame was followed by a wildly demanding tour schedule which required him to hastily traverse the globe while simultaneously spending long, sleepless hours in the studio. Between 2011 and 2016, Avicii released two albums, three EPs and played somewhere in the vicinity of 220 DJ sets in 261 weeks. His energetic schedule, heavy drinking and party habits came to a sudden halt in 2013.

A few days before he was slated to play Future Music Festival in Australia, Avicii was admitted into the hospital for “stomach related issues." It was later revealed that due to his unhealthy lifestyle, the artist would have to have his gallbladder removed.

A clip from a new documentary titled Avicii: True Stories, captures his time in the hospital during his Australian tour. It shows doctors speaking to Avicii about his serious condition, followed far too quickly by a car ride with his manager who begins to hassle the sickly looking Avicii about upcoming shows and interviews while he looks on the verge of consciousness.

Directed by Levan Tsikurishvili, who followed and filmed the artist for a period of four years, the movie is a heartrending and grave tale of Avicii’s expeditious rise, his struggle with identity and the dangers of touring.

Eventually, the mental tax and physical toll touring took on the artist came to a head and on March 29 2016, Avicii made what he called the "hardest decision of my life" and announced that he would be retiring from touring and live events at the end of the year.
