30 shots of the brilliant performances of FYF Fest in Los Angeles

When FYF Fest in Los Angeles announced the lineup for its 2017 event, there were no arguments – this lineup was superior. Coachella’s cooler, younger sibling FYF extended to three days this year and did not disappoint. As one of the best overall lineups of the year in North America, it boasted headliners Missy Elliott, Frank Ocean, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork and A Tribe Called Quest.

FYF went above and beyond to make sure the lineup was solid from the ground up, impressing the highbrow hip hop fans, indie-band loyalists, sophisticated crossover fans and even the most finicky of dance music snobs.

The festival hit a home run particularly with dance music fans, bringing in a unique lineup of DJs which is hard to do in this saturated festival market. The Woods stage was by far the most intimate and best sounding stage which played host to solely top tier DJs all weekend, along with the Outer Space stage, which gave off a roller-disco meets high-school dance vibe, in the best way possible.

Highlights from the weekend included Avalon Emerson, the San Francisco-bred and Berlin-based talent who returned to California with not one, but two FYF performances across the weekend. Helena Hauff was another standout, who made an impression with her first ever North American performance thanks to her take-no-prisoners electro-techno hybrid, and of course, The Black Madonna too, who delivered as always, closing out The Woods stage on Saturday and also throwing down a b2b set with Tiga on Sunday afternoon in Outer Space.

Mixmag experienced some memorable extended sets from John Talabot, DJ Harvey and Honey Soundystem and some of the best performances in Mixmag's recent memory from Tiga, Daniel Avery, Omar S and Motor City Drum Ensemble. The weekend was topped off at The Club with Talaboman (a collaboration between John Talabot and Axel Boman) after experiencing a Nine Inch Nails set straight off the back of their brand new album. FYF has finally perfected the city festival, making it yet another win for Goldenvoice.
