The tracks that prove Art Basel isn't just about the art
Here are the tunes that went down at the Miami parties... Because who actually went for the art?!
It's taken a few days to almost fully recover from Art Basel's Miami Beach edition. In its 13th year, ABMB, is North America's premier annual art show that occurs during the first week of December. This year Miami expected an influx of 750,000 people... 500k more than WMC and Ultra 2015.
Now that the art festival has become full-blown with more independent fairs in place, it's an excuse for NYC venue owners and night life promoters, musicians, and dance music labels to takeover downtown Miami's art district, Wynwood, and Miami Beach. The result: a fuck-ton of New York and LA influencers and an overwhelming amount of day and night parties with some of the best and most eclectic music programming possibly imaginable in one city and one week... that's actually meant for art collectors.
There were too many amazing dance music events to account for and attend, but here are our favorite and most memorable songs from the week.
Kelela 'Rewind'
Props to Kelela for being the most-played and appreciated emerging artist at ABMB 2015. The Kingdom and Nugget produced track was played by the Fade to Mind founder himself, as well as Kindness at Baby Basel, the pop up by Brooklyn venue Baby's All Right. Kindness played it again a couple nights later at the Saint Heron x Jack Shaiman Gallery party to a diverse crowd of Solange and art enthusiasts.
Alton Ellis 'If I Could Rule The World'
Played by Four Tet during his killer reggae-heavy set at III Points Art Basel Miami on Friday night, which also included Jamie xx and Will Buck (The Deep). Kieran blew our minds and made us think we were partying on the nearby sands of the Bahamas.
Jamie xx 'I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)'
Obviously we knew good times were to be had throughout our night with Yung Turks + III Points and who doesn't love sing-shouting the hilarious-ass Young Thug line about riding in it like a stroller? #CRYING
Justin Bieber (prod. Jack Ü) 'Sorry'
Dear Jack Ü... Please stop making us such freaking Beliebers. This song is so damn good, you felt the ear-ringing, earthquaking passion from club-goers when Flat White (Virgil Abloh) played it during his set at Manhattan's Up 'n' Down pop-up at Rockwell Miami Beach.
Teedra Moses 'Be Your Girl' (Kaytranada Edition)
Kaytranada dropped this one in the middle of his set on the third and final night of III Points Art Basel Miami. Teedra Moses' vocals over Kaytra's edit had us feeling wavy and popping our hips. In the same vain, Kaytranada closed his set with Girl, which he helped produce for The Internet's Grammy-nominated album, Ego Death.
Four Tet 'Love Cry'
An oldie also played during Four Tet's III Point set. He mixed this original to loosen our bodies to prepare for the on-coming reggae-thon.
