Avalon Emerson 'Dystopian Daddy' (Ghostly International)
2016's been shit. With that in mind, we might as well stick two fingers up to it and bow out with the same sense of mischief as this. Avalon combines sledgehammer techno kicks with wriggling, high-voltage synths, but the real moment of glory hits around the three-minute mark with the introduction of pads so powerful you feel they could beam you way up high. Once they disappear, the synths' bad behaviour returns, just in time to enter 2017 like a real rascal.
Jhelisa 'Friendly Pressure' (Sunship's From Midnight Mix) (Dorado)
Sometimes all you want on New Year's Eve is a cushty gaff full of your mates and a fridge full of bubbly. If there's a genre that goes hand-in-hand with bottles popping, it's garage and this 1998 cut is a stone cold classic. Sunship turn Jhelisa's dusky love song into a seductive party jam, so pull out your best Moschino, give this a spin and get down to some real vintage 2-step.
