10 bangers that will give your NYE party a turbo boost
Let mayhem ensue...
NYE is a minefield of parties, booziness and all round debauchery – that is unless you've opted for a quiet one with mum and dad watching Jools Holland and his dull-as-shit annual Hootenanny.
Whether you're out raving, hitting a house party, going to the pub or even DJing at the aforementioned, it's important you make the right decision
Let us curate your party: sprinkle a few of these tracks in and you're going to look like Carl Cox rather than Karl Pilkington. Here are your NYE bangers, use them well and use them wisely. This is your time to shine.
Avalon Emerson 'Dystopian Daddy' (Ghostly International)
2016's been shit. With that in mind, we might as well stick two fingers up to it and bow out with the same sense of mischief as this. Avalon combines sledgehammer techno kicks with wriggling, high-voltage synths, but the real moment of glory hits around the three-minute mark with the introduction of pads so powerful you feel they could beam you way up high. Once they disappear, the synths' bad behaviour returns, just in time to enter 2017 like a real rascal.
Jhelisa 'Friendly Pressure' (Sunship's From Midnight Mix) (Dorado)
Sometimes all you want on New Year's Eve is a cushty gaff full of your mates and a fridge full of bubbly. If there's a genre that goes hand-in-hand with bottles popping, it's garage and this 1998 cut is a stone cold classic. Sunship turn Jhelisa's dusky love song into a seductive party jam, so pull out your best Moschino, give this a spin and get down to some real vintage 2-step.
Mood Hut 'Better' (Mood Hut)
If you’re hoping to ring in the new year with a smile on your face and perhaps that special someone in your arms, then look no further than Mood Hut’s uplifting belter. With it’s melancholic opening refrain making way for pure, horn-driven disco delight, it’s perfectly suited for a kiss under the mirror ball at midnight. Just don’t lose it too hard when that rumbling bassline kicks in.
Don Carlos 'Alone' (Calypso Records)
While you might not want to end up as the title track suggests on the night, Don Carlos’ Italo house banger from 1991 still holds court in modern sets (see: Palms Trax at Dekmantel). With it’s weightless pads, shimmering arps and a very bumping bassline, it might just be the perfect tune to keep you in that blissful moment where 2016 is over, but the realities of 2017 are yet to begin.
Dave x AJ Tracey 'Thiago Silva' (Tropics Records)
See out '16 with one of the biggest grime tracks of the year. Just like Stormzy's 2015 smash 'Shut Up', this hit uses a classic Ruff Sqwad instrumental as its main inspiration, with the two young London MCs stepping out to prove just why they're leading the new wave of UK lyricists. Instantly recognisable, this'll have the rum jumping right out your cup when you drop it at whatever house party you're going to on NYE.
Adesse Versions 'Marijuana' (Adesse Versions)
This mash-up by the man like Adesse might split opinion. It's an outrageous blend of Aly's-Us' 'Follow Me' and Richie Spice's 'Marijuana' that'll incense purists but completely entertain party people who like a bit of mischievous fun. And the latter crew is exactly who will be out on New Year's Eve, so get this one loaded and watch the floor pop off.
Pearson Sound ‘XLB’ (Pearson Sound)
No cut messed with our minds as consistently as Pearson Sound’s ‘XLB’ this year. It’s one of the tracks we heard out most often and every single time that combination of vortex synths and alien mechanics sent us spiralling. If you’re looking for a track that will have people attempting to punch the ceiling in states of untamed hyperactivity as the clock strikes midnight, the drop on this is a surefire winner.
The Persuader ‘What Is The Time, Mr. Templar?’ (PND)
The time for this track, Mr. Templar, is NYE. Originally released in 1997, the masterful production from Jesper Dahlbäck hasn’t lost a miligram of its dancefloor impact over the years. The immersive synth line that shimmers at the fore throughout induces transcendent bliss when washing over audiences. It's a perfect note to start the year on and hopefully transport us into a brighter future.
Traumprinz 'Good Vibrations' (Kasha's Main Vocal Mix) (Giegling)
Traumprinz aka Prince of Denmark aka DJ Metatron aka the deepest man in underground dance music strikes again. Giegling have established themselves as a label that you want to know and if you don't know about them then you're missing out. With some of the most in demand EPs of the year, Traumprinz rounded off an amazing year with an EP featuring one hell of a 'Good Vibrations' edit. What better way to smash a party into pieces than dropping a remix of Marky fucking Mark. This year's feel good ripper.
Right this one is a guaranteed winner, trust us, it doesn't matter when you deploy the iconic chords of Paul Johnson's 'Get Get Down' it's going to bang and it's going to get people dancing. Think of this one as your 'get out of jail free' card. It's an anthem for the ages and it's just a really happy track. Spanky as you like and unashamedly tongue-in-cheek, you can't go wrong with a bit of Johnson. Beware though, make sure your follow up track packs heat as well, otherwise you may set yourself up for a little fall. Ah fuck it, it's NYE – just get steaming.
