Six artists you need to check out this month

When taking time away from her work as a scientist and environmental toxicologist, Jayda G crafts bouncey, off-kilter house. The Canadian producer’s debut solo EP ‘Jaydaisms’ feels like a long-forgotten treasure trove of party anthems, drawing inspiration from the disco and soul she grew up with. The EP was released earlier this year on her own label Freakout Cult, but the tumbling piano jabs of ‘IGA’ and jolty percussion of ‘Sound Of Fuca’ dispel any feelings of staleness.

Brainfeeder brought jazz to a new audience with Kamasi Washington’s 2015 album ‘The Epic’, and they’re following it up with something described as “naive computer jazz” by its creator Jameszoo. The Dutchman’s debut album ‘Fool’ follows the string of EPs he’s released since 2012 – but while they all employed electronic production as their foundations, Jameszoo says those same techniques are merely “an instrument in the range of many” on an LP that could be one of 2016’s funnest debuts.

André Rost, aka Chambray, is the first Berlin artist to release on Jimmy Edgar’s ULTRAMAJIC imprint – and it’s not hard to see why. Having won support from Boys Noize with his 2014 debut EP ‘YUU’, the 30-year-old has gone on to deliver some massive dancefloor heaters full of punchy house such as ‘Anew’ and ‘Rub’. His next release, the three-track ‘Evenue’ EP, will be released on DJ Haus’ Unknown To The Unknown label – and there’s a Duke Dumont collaboration in the pipeline, too.

With early outings on Moon Harbour, Noir and Glasgow Underground, Sabb has already caught the attention of some of dance music’s biggest imprints. On ‘One of Us’, the Swiss-based producer builds a thunderous slab of tech house before undercutting the rumble with the falsetto vocals of collaborator Forrest, while new release ‘Enclose’ is an emotive cut with glistening synthlines. With upcoming releases on both Circus and Suara, there should be plenty more to come from Sabb soon.

The title of Kedr Livanskiy’s debut single ‘Sgoraet’ translates from her native Russian as ‘Burning Down’, offering a hint of the nihilistic mindset her DIY electronica stems from. Her stellar EP ‘January Sun’ flits between pounding rhythmical workouts such as ‘Keep Your Word’ and minimal, hazy atmospherics with gossamer vocals that will appeal to fans of Julianna Barwick and Grimes. Her exhilirating productions suggest that the Russian underground might go deeper than we thought.

While most students are in the library pulling Pro Plus-fuelled all-nighters at this time of year, German-born sociology student Kevin Over has been busy producing techno groovers for the likes of Noir, Get Physical, Mobilee and VIVa Music in his spare time. Adam Beyer is a fan of the 25-year-old’s punchy, main room-leaning productions: within minutes of sending Beyer ‘Duster’ and ‘Ode’, two tracks calling out for a mammoth soundsystem, he snapped them up to his Truesoul roster.
