Six artists you need to check this month
We recommend these lot
Flohio
“They wanna hunt me down and attack the kid, but it’s SE16 you will find me in,” Flohio spits on God Colony’s ‘SE16’. The track’s an ode to her London borough of Bermondsey and was followed by Annie Mac giving away another GC and Flohio collab, the ice-cold ‘My World’. Now, the TRULUVCRU member’s got the mean-hearted ‘Nowhere Near’ EP behind her and has another lined up with God Colony. You know where to find her when you want more.
God Colony ‘My World’ feat Flohio is out now
Tommy Vercetti
If you like your house big, brash and full of sunny piano lines then Tommy Vercetti might be the man for you. Taking his name from a character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the 22-year-old from Walsall has been pumping out jackin’ house since the age of 16. He’s had support from Richy Ahmed, Roger Sanchez, Sidney Charles and Claude VonStroke, and his new EP is due out on Darius Syrossian’s label, Do Not Sleep Ibiza.
Tommy Vercetti plays Void, Digbeth on November 12
Air Max '97
Air Max '97 bridges the gap between grime and techno. Transplanting the Eski sound onto rushing rhythms, the Melbourne-based artist – along with Zora Jones, Ziúr and SKY H1 – is helping define icy, club-heavy productions in 2016. With releases on Trax Couture, Liminal Sounds and NLV, he’s launched his own label, Decisions, delving even deeper into darker sounds. On his ‘HPE’ EP, tracks twist over syncopated beats to keep heads spinning for days.
‘HPE’ EP is out now on Decisions
Stephan Hinz
Stephan Hinz composes dark, emotive techno to get lost to in sweaty warehouses. Since the massive ‘Doch’ on Pan-Pot’s Second State in 2014, the Berlin-based artist has been smashing it, releasing on Drumcode and Intec while playing explosive sets at HYTE and Watergate. With a newly curated live show, Hinz is gearing up for another huge release via Second State, ‘The Venom’ EP. Capable of both wall-shaking club records and more trippy productions, Stephan is banging on the door of the techno elite.
The ‘Venom’ EP is out October 10 on Second State
HAAi
30-year-old HAAi has had a residency at East London’s Ridley Road Market Bar for the last two years. Playing everything from Nigerian funk and 60s French pop to Thai and Turkish oddities, it’s here that she built a reputation as one of London’s best new selectors. It’s also where she caught the attention of Andy Peyton, owner of XOYO and Phonox. He was so impressed he offered her the coveted Saturday night residency at Brixton’s Phonox, where she’ll take the reins from Jasper James this month.
HAAi plays Phonox in Brixton every Saturday night
Drones Club
When they’re not waving tambourines in the face of commuters at Oxford Circus tube station, or storming London Fashion Week in boiler suits and balaclavas, Drones Club are fusing pop, electronica and techno like no-one else. Operating as an ‘ever-expanding organisation’ with three ‘core members’, the KLF-esque London collective’s ‘Rasa’ EP proves that they’re more than capable of creating anthemic, driving, and at times poignant electronica all of their own.
Drones Club play Headrow House, Leeds, on October 30
