Kllo
Hailing from Melbourne, cousins Chloe and Simon came together after forming a band to perform at Simon’s mum’s 50th. Since their debut track ‘Make Me Wonder’ in 2014, their style has veered between dreamlike electro-pop and delicate UK garage melodies. New track ‘Bolide’ confidently showcases Chloe’s vocals, a catchy bass groove effortlessly flowing through the track. Musical tastemakers from Rob da Bank and Huw Stephens are among those championing the duo.
‘Well Worn’ is out on Ghostly International on August 5
Krrum
A former butcher from the Peak District, Krrum has a touch of eccentricity about him. Writing songs from the age of 13, the 20-year-old’s quirky yet accessible productions have already topped Hype Machine. Influenced by early Gorillaz, Justin Vernon’s melancholic songwriting and Jai Paul, his bombastic brass blasts and infectious, distorted vocals add up to twisted electro-soul fit for another dimension. New single ‘Hard On You’, with its Flumey synth stabs and Jack Garratt-style chorus, follows on perfectly, with live shows to come.
‘Hard On You’ is out now on 37 Adventures
Latmun
Joe Bradley, aka Latmun, has been quietly pumping out tech-house for a while, but his tracks sound like he’s been in the game for 15 years – according to famed Californian outfit Desert Heart Records. His recent ‘DEF’ EP has had Radio 1 play and has gained plaudits from the likes of Skream, Lee Foss and Denney. The 24-year-old started DJing in his first year at uni, and producing two years later. Having made his mark as a resident at Stealth in Nottingham, he has since played XOYO and will play Adobe at Sankeys Ibiza later this year.
‘DEF’ EP is out now on VIVa
Girli
17-year-old GIRLI can flick from tales of sniffing glue to female empowerment mantras within seconds. With barrels of angst and humour, the London singer merges bubblegum dance-pop with fierceness, as on the spit-in-your-eye feminist anthem ‘Girls Get Angry Too’, which was produced by Shutdown’s Ragz Originale. On ‘So You Think You Can Fuck With Me, Do Ya’, she mocks listeners with a teasing ballad that’s eventually blasted away by a highly energised mix of 8-bit, grime and Eurodance. The self-proclaimed ‘samurai princess’ is taking no prisoners.
‘Too Much Fun’ is out July 1 on PMR
River Tiber
Is it just us or has Canada slowly turned into the centre of the musical universe? Once guilty of birthing Bryan Adams and Céline Dion, the country’s been on a roll of late with stars like Kaytranada, Drake and the Weeknd. Next to blow up is Toronto producer River Tiber, who drops his debut album ‘Indigo’ this month. He had songwriting credits on Drake’s ‘If You’re Reading This…’ and popped up on Kaytranada’s album too. But the multi-instrumentalist can hold his own with expertly crafted, spaced-out and soulful hip hop. Expect big things.
‘Indigo’ is self-released on June 24
Chaos In The CBD
Despite being born and bred in New Zealand, Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales’ music under their Chaos In The CBD moniker fits well into their adopted home, Peckham. Their recent deep house cuts – out on south-east London staples Church and Rhythm Section, among others – come infused with jazz, funk and hip hop, while often evoking the soulfulness of the likes of Theo Parrish and Moodymann. Check their soulful, disco-heavy mixes out recently on Dimensions and Stamp The Wax.
‘Global Erosion’ EP is out at the start of June on YAM Records
