Sherwood & Pinch

Take a trip with two dub psychonauts

"I am convinced that the psychedelic experience is of utmost importance, and must be approached with respect and love," says a voice at the beginning of Sherwood & Pinch's In Session. It drifts across the start of 'Elixir Of Life', one of Sherwood's collaborations with Jamaican dub master Lee 'Scratch' Perry and sets the tone perfectly for this hour-long selection.

A mix, yes. But also a trip, in the lysergic sense of the word. For nothing is as it seems: the marching dub of Sherwood's band, Dub Syndicate, melts into the industrial twist 'n' shake of Nurve's 'Clik Clak'; Kinzy's muscular production evaporates amidst the cloud 9 synths on Higher Authorities' 'Phase Recording'; the tick-tock paranoia that makes 2562's 'Vibedoctor' go round hits a buffer when Disrupts digi dub drops. Press play and enter an ever-changing aural landscape, where you'll be courted by Sherwood's love of heady dub, strung-out atmospheres and surreal, sometimes dystopian, samples as well as Pinch's penchant for futuristic strains of club music, mutated bass and sounds sourced from the eerie black of night. Sherwood & Pinch's choice of tunes look diverse on paper but when played together, are bound by low-end and an overt sense of rhythm. Plus they both blatantly want to spin you out.

But then that's to be expected. Their debut 12" together, which dropped in the summer of 2013, was called 'Bring Me Weed' and featured a 'Psychosis Mix' of the original on the B-side. Sunny on one side and totally frazzled on the other, it set out the pair's ambitions. Two years on and their collaborative album, 'Late Night Endless', is about to arrive. It explores their interests as a duo, winding in and out of hot plains and dank shadows, hitting contemplative moments and bursts of soundsystem-killing energy as it goes.

The link is enough to make any soundboy or girl rise up. We have Adrian Sherwood, who's been operating since the 80s, tirelessly representing and creating UK dub music as well as running the towering On U Sound imprint. And we have Pinch, OG dubstep producer, restless collaborator (check his work with Mumdance and Shackleton, respectively) and an individual dedicated to keeping bass-heavy dance music on the front foot via his Tectonic and Cold imprints. Nuff said.

In true dubwise fashion their In Session contains upfront exclusives from Mumdance & Logos, Walton, Higher Authorities, RSD, Disrupt & Lee Perry and Sherwood himself. Forward!

Sherwood & Pinch 'Late Night Endless' is out via Tectonic & On U Sound on February 9
