Noise Manifesto: Paula Temple's techno refuses to lie down

Paula Temple's pioneering approach to dance music is vital now more than ever

Paula Temple is a vital force driving techno forward. As both an engineer and an artist, she’s maintained an approach defined by progression over the past two decades. Whether that be crafting her mindblowing hybrid live-DJ sets, producing earth-shattering cuts of industrial techno, or designing the seminal MXF8 controller during time away from the frontline of the scene.

In 2015 she formally launched her label Noise Manifesto. The title refers to a proclamation setting out the principles of the imprint, underpinned by an aim to dismantle privilege through promises such as featuring “at least 50 per cent artists who identify as trans, female, woman, non-male, non-conforming or queer” on every release.

This has translated into the Decon/Recon series, which sees four producers collate samples together, and then each create an individual track from the collection, with the resulting four productions credited to all four artists. In doing so, the series breaks down pre-conceived boundaries and challenges structural hierarchies in music.

The debut record was released to acclaim in April 2015, featuring rRoxymore, Aquarian Jugs and Oni Ayhun alongside Paula Temple. Having taken her time to pull together artists perfectly suited to the project, the second instalment lands later this month, with SØS Gunver Ryberg, Aïsha Devi and Rrose joining forces with the label boss to unleash an EP of powerful, mentally displacing techno.

We caught up with Paula Temple to discuss the motives of Noise Manifesto, dismantling capitalism, and the complexity of her live show, and she handed us the premiere of ‘DR2-3’ from ‘Decon/Recon #2’. Check it all out below.
