May: 10 big tunes you need to hear this month

Wrap your ears around these goodies

1 Tom Demac

'Sink Or Swim' (Hypercolour)

He’s released on Drumcode, Aus and his own Electronique Audio, but this is Tom Demac’s first Big Tunes No 1. Praise for this muscular, melodic techno brooder have come from the likes of PBR Streetgang: it can only be a matter of time before Cocoon comes knocking.

2 Gorillaz feat De La Soul

'Momentz' (Parlophone)

The new Gorillaz album features another stellar cast, including Danny Brown, Grace Jones and Kelela, but ‘Momentz’, which features De La Soul and keyboards from Jean Michelle Jarre, already sounds like it will follow in the footsteps of ‘Feel Good, INC’.

3 T&P

'Hail Falls' (Hammer remix) (Feel My Bicep)

T&P is Tim ‘Beats In Space’ Sweeney and Philip ‘Lauer’ Lauer, who appears twice in Big Tunes this month (see TSS below!). Releasing on Feel My Bicep for the first time, this epic Moroder-y synth bleeper hits all the right notes, and Hammer’s mix is unarguably the best of the bunch.

4 Talamanca System

'My Past Is Your Future' (International Feel)

With a moniker like this, Talamanca System were never going to go wrong! And with an Essential Mix, Fabric comp and Tuff City remixes aplenty, Gerd Janson’s latest project – with Philip Lauer and Mark Barrott - doesn’t disappoint. It’s piano-powered Balearic goodness of the highest order.

5 Christophe

'Dance Pants' (Futureboogie)

On the scene since 2011, Bristol’s Futureboogie imprint marks five years of quality tuneage with its 50th release, a nicely acidic instrumental club smash from Christophe that resurrects the hip-house spirit of ‘I’ll House You’ for more futuristic club floors.

6 Auntie Flo

'Waiting For A Woman' (Huntleys)

Quite a lot has happened with this track since we first heard it. Originally edited by The Revenge, now Dixon has edited the edit! And his edit has just been released as part of a bigger remix package (Kornél Kovács, Throwing Shade, Mark E, Africaine 808). If that doesn’t excite you, nothing will.

7 Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons

'I Found You' (Black Coffee Journey remix) (Crosstown Rebels)

It’s quite a coup getting Black Coffee so early in the morning these days, so kudos to Crosstown for securing this sublime 6AM sunriser (there’s also a techno workout from Patrice Bäumel). A new album from the Moons is due soon.

8 Lauren Lo Sung

'Tresor' (HPF)

Lauren’s Big Tunes debut is everything we’d hoped it would be – and more. Released on DJ Steaw’s new House Puff imprint (he also remixed ‘Tresor’), this peak-time techno jam premiered on Mixmag.net at the end of March. Don’t forget to check the trippy ‘S.A.B.’ on the flip.

9 Noncompliant

'More Than Surviving' (Valence)

Yes, we’re well aware that we’re at peak Black Madonna fever right now – and her XOYO residency has only just begun! – but this brilliantly bruising, mind-bending jam from DJ Shiva was one of the highlights of her January cover mix and also premiered on Mixmag.net last month. Enough said!

10 Sasha feat Poliça

'Out Of Time' (Kompakt)

With Laurent Garnier releasing a killer EP on Kompakt and this sublime vocal jam from Sasha (his first on Kompakt) featuring Minneapolis’ Poliça dropping at the same time, the label is very much back in the singles game. And this is up there with the (still unreleased!) ‘Track 10’.
