Amsterdam hosted the most recent pop-up, with Sonos Studio AMS setting up shop in the Dutch capital during ADE for three days of workshops, performances and listening sessions hosted by local heroes and international heavyweights in a unique manor house in the centre of the city.
Day one of the programme operated under the theme of 'originators', featuring conversations with seminal techno producer Derrick May, Yoruba Records' erudite boss Osúnlade, and Amsterdam-natives Detroit Swindle, in which they discussed musical heroes, how they approach DJ sets, growing up in their respective home-scenes, and more.
Speaking about his own origins in an Q&A for the Sonos Studio website Derrick May divulged: "I learnt how to mix music with – here it comes! – Edwin Birdsong's track 'Rapper Dapper Snapper' and David Bowie's 'Fashion'. I was determined to mix those two records together well.
"I had to mix them over and over again because I could never get it right. That's how I learnt to DJ; with those two records. Two of the most difficult records you are ever going to mix in your life!"
In their Q&A for Sonos Studio, Detroit Swindle also spoke about domestic bliss, with one half of the duo Maarten Smeets revealing: "I enjoy sharing the music I love with my children. Sometimes I play a house record and my one-year-old son starts to bounce. That's such a joy to me."
Each of the artists also played a selection of tracks they love during the interviews - to listen to the podcast recordings and read the discussions in full go here.
