tune of the month

BB Boogie feat Leroy Burgess 'Tonight We Gonna' (R2 Records)

It’s always a pleasure to see Leroy Burgess’ name appear on a new release, and when it’s paired with a producer like BB Boogie you know it’s not going to disappoint. Boogie gets deep, soulful and heavy on ‘Tonight We Gonna’, with Leroy’s vocals spotlighted as the main ingredient – and rightly so, too, as it’s not every day you get a living legend of his stature dropping it fresh and funky like this.

10/10

Joutro Mundo 'Olhos de Sá' (Midnight Riot)

Joutro Mundo is one of the hottest producers in the game right now. Here, he proves the hype is justified as he delivers round two in his much-loved ‘Brazilian Boogie & Disco’ series, with eight tracks of pure dynamite coming from the land of the hot groove. ‘Olhos de Sá’ sees the tempo drop slightly, but the beats are just as deadly as ever, with Mundo teasing us with his trademark hypnotic acid squelches over a deep sun-drenched horn section, funky guitars and fluid keyboard hooks so good that you’ll never want it to end. Sadly it does, but like all the other jams included here, it’s a total floorbuster, and one of the many highlights from an extremely impressive album. It’s the perfect choice for any disco, funk and house jocks out there who are eager to drop some South American magic in their sets.

9/10

Space Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee 'Keep On Loving You' (Editorial Records)

Montreal-based DJ, producer and label head honcho Dave Allison finally unleashes his first LP under his Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee moniker – and it’s been worth the wait. First up, ‘Slo Mo Disco’ brings together everything you could possibly need for your poolside vibes, touching on deeper house moods and funky old-school hip hop elements layered with obscure samples and killer organic musicianship; it’s a total party from its first minute to its last. ‘Keep On Loving You’ has something equally special about it, too, with trippy gospel piano deployed over a female vocal refrain, rough percussion and a tight bassline that pulls you straight onto the dancefloor and never lets you go.

8/10

Space Craft’s Men 'Crossing' (Fly By Night Music)

Fly By Night Music boss Lorenzo digs deep into his personal collection of obscure Italian cuts to bring you the new compilation album ‘Musica Per L’Immagine’, which includes this standout cut from Space Craft’s Men. ‘Crossing’ is our favourite track on the LP: it’s an interstellar disco-chug vessel that sounds like it’s been programmed to shuttle you on a journey from a control room of heavy analogue synthesis. Blasting from the past – 1983, to be precise – this record will be a real asset to your disco bag, ready for you to drop it at any party for many years to come. Make sure to pick it up on this comp, though, as the price tag of the original on Discogs will make you weep.

9/10

DJ Nature 'Born Lifted' (Future Boogie Recordings)

DJ Nature joins forces with Bristol’s Future Boogie on this new EP that combines disco and funk-influenced flavours with heavy chunks of Detroit blues. ‘Born Lifted’ boasts wonky and off-kilter rhythms with warm keys and gorgeous female vocals. With a sound that’s made up of both live instrumentation and samples, it’s a rich melting pot of noises that’s reminiscent of the likes of Massive Attack, but will also appeal to fans of Moodymann and Theo Parrish. Always pushing boundaries, Milo remains one step ahead of the rest of the pack.
