July: 10 big tunes you need to hear this month

Nina Kraviz, Marquis Hawkes, Mr G and more

1 Nina Kraviz

'You Are Wrong' (трип)

There’s no denying that when Nina puts her mind to it (which is often), she delivers on the music front. This meditative new edit, originally included on ‘Fabric 91’, sounds like a Room One 6am special: wait for the chords at the five-minute mark.

2 Hugo Massien

'No Return' (E-Beamz)

Fresh from his critically acclaimed XL debut and fully deserving of the No 2 slot in Big Tunes this month, ‘No Return’ samples Ashanti’s 2001 classic ‘Foolish’ and adds a glistening techno groove so huge that if Printworks doesn’t patent it, we’ll be very surprised.

3 Marquis Hawkes

'The Basement Is Burning' (Aus)

Regular readers of Big Tunes will know that we’re committed, long-term fans of Marquis Hawkes, and this piano-centric instrumental – which is more commercial than recent Hawkes housers – could prove to be this summer’s answer to ‘Needin U’. Ace.

4 Archie Hamilton & Enzo Siragusa

'Ricochet' (Moscow)

Mixmag.net’s premieres favour quality over quantity, and Moscow Records has the same ethos. Now MR label boss and FUSE London resident Archie Hamilton has hooked up with fellow FUSE-r Enzo Siragusa (pictured) on three-track ‘Dubinnovation’ EP, led by the tech bubbler ‘Ricochet’.

5 Pastaboys & Osunlade

'Deep Musique' (Rebirth)

Italian label Rebirth have upped their game again of late, and this Innervisions-ish anthem from producers Uovo, Dino Angioletti and Rame has already been made an Essential New Tune, not to mention winning support from Dixon, Adriatique and Acid Pauli.

6 Hercules & Love Affair feat Sharon Van Etten

'Omnion' (Joe Goddard remix) (Skint)

Following on from the excellent ‘Controller’ (which was remixed by Mike Simonetta and TCK), here comes ‘Omnion’ which comes equipped with a muscular Horse Meat Disco-inspired mix for Saturday and Sunday night floors alike.

7 Dusky

'Cold Heart' (17 Steps)

Dusky have been relatively quiet since the release of their album ‘Outer’, so it’s a warm welcome back for the UK house duo, with this assured house jam which nicely channels the spirit of Hardrive’s ‘Deep Inside’. Does anyone else remember 1995?

8 Mr G

'Soba Shioyaki' (Holic)

More of a 4am techno throbber than a 6am sunrise anthem, there’s no denying that Mr G’s purple patch continues apace in 2017. A nicely grooving Detroit-ish instrumental with a diva vocal intoning ‘You never wanna love a man’, this couldn’t be any more Fabric-friendly if it tried. Turn it up!

9 Leftwing & Cody

'Sound Boy' (Solid Grooves)

Another track that will have premiered on Mixmag.net by the time you read this, this Skream-approved vocal smash (“I am feeling hot tonight”) has been kept under wraps identity-wise since it first aired last December – but is now seeing the light of day on Solid Grooves.

10 Sentre

'Make Me' (Bird Up!)

When they’re not in the studio making music with Sasha, Dave Gardner and Dennis White also make sublime synth-fuelled soundscapes like ‘Make Me’ under the moniker Sentre. There’s an album full of jams incoming, but we’re opting for the anthemic opening track.
