In Session: DJ Marfox

Marfox's name first began to light up the projects in 2006, when he had tracks included on 'DJ's Do Guetto Vol.1', a sprawling compilation of tracks made by a bevy of different producers (including the influential DJ Nervoso, a scene godfather who is also a descendant of the island of Príncipe and helped Marfox learn to produce). His ascent has been slow and steady ever since, releasing a small but nonetheless powerful collection of records on Enchufada, Lit City Trax and Warp (on which he was part of the Lisbon-centric 'Cargaa' series).

Perhaps his rise would be accelerated if this music were accessible in the traditional sense (there are few vocals, bar hype-inducing loops of words like "Go!" and the productions are always raw and uber banging) but that doesn't really matter. Marfox has been a huge influence on his city and leads a pack of artists barely into their 20s.

He returns this month to Príncipe with a new EP titled 'Chapa Quente'. The six-tracker contains his best work yet, his pounding production style emboldening the kinetic rhythms that he summons at will. His celebratory In Session is packed with his own work as well as that of his mentor, Nervoso and a few other key heads, including DJ Firmeza. Fire it up right now.
